When James Dunsmuir purchased the Hatley Park land in 1907, he acquired some surrounding property to expand the estate and hired Samuel Maclure to design the large family home, now known as Hatley Castle. In 1911, unsatisfied with the estate layout, Dunsmuir hired Brett and Hall, a Boston-based landscaping company, to develop the estate and model farm.

George Bucknam Wright attended Royal Roads January to April in 1941, in the first class of RCNVR Special Entry cadets. The first five classes were also known informally as ‘90 Day wonders’, as their wartime training at HMCS Royal Roads was just over 3 months. Born 18 June, 1910, Wright worked for the Hudsons Bay Company before joining the RCNVR. On completing training, he joined HMCS Wetaskiwin and was later promoted to lieutenant. While posted to HMCS St Croix as Torpedo Officer, he lost his life when the ship was sunk on 20 September 1943.

William John Spencer attended HMCS Royal Roads from 1942 to 1943. He was in the first class to graduate from The Royal Canadian Naval College, Royal Roads. Born May 17, 1924, he served in battleships HMS King George V and Howe. He obtained his wings in February 1947 and died in a plane crash in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 24 April, 1952.

Gerald James Martin attended Canadian Services College Royal Roads from 1950-1952. Born in 1931, he served with the army in the Fort Garry Horse. He was killed while on exercise in the St Elias mountain range, Yukon territory.

Ronald Raymond Fleming attended Canadian Services College Royal Roads from 1956-1958. Born in 1937, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was stationed at CFB Edmonton, AB with 450 Transport Helicopter Squadron when he was killed in a training accident on 19 March, 1974.

Robert George Gates attended Canadian Services College Royal Roads from 1964-1966. Born in 1946, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with the Aerospace Engineering and Test Establishment. He was killed in a helicopter crash near Cold Lake, AB on 6 April 1977.

Terrance Allan McKenzie attended Royal Roads Military College from 1972-1974. Born in 1953, he joined the Air Force and was serving with the 419 Tactical Fighter (Training) squadron when he was killed in a plane crash 80 miles from CFB Cold Lake, AB on 7 March 1983.
