The lower pond is one of three artificial lakes created from a creek on the property. Fish ladders were installed to connect the ponds and encourage trout to spawn in the Japanese garden pond.

The Italian garden to the west of the castle was added as part of extensive development of the Hatley Park estate by Boston based landscape architects, Brett and Hall from 1912-1914. This image shows the lawns between the Italian garden, visible on the right, and the Japanese garden. White garden benches are positioned under the maple in this picture.

The Italian garden to the west of the castle was added as part of extensive development of the Hatley Park estate by Boston based landscape architects, Brett and Hall from 1912-1914. The pathway here on the north side of the garden clearly shows that it is raised in the centre to assist drainage.
