  • 1910-1920

Images in this fonds are pages from an album compiled by Ella Hayward and show the Hayward family at Hatley Park from 1910 to 1920 as well as newspaper clippings about Dunsmuir family members. Ella Hayward was born in Victoria in 1907 to Philip Francis and Minnie Hayward. Philip Francis Hayward was employed at Hatley Park between 1910 and 1920 as a florist and likely also as manager of the glasshouse complex. At this time, the Hayward family lived in the gardener’s cottage at Hatley Park, just outside the west side of the walled garden, near the greenhouse and conservatory. A second daughter, Frances Hayward, was born in 1913, while the family lived at Hatley Park. Philip Francis Hayward left Hatley Park employment around 1920 and in 1923 he and his family moved to California where he continued his career as a florist.

There are several images of the castle, gardens and grounds at various points in time, as well as of Dunsmuir family members, and those of staff or contractors who worked on the Hatley Park estate. Some images are not from Hatley Park but have been included in collection because of their obvious connections, such as images of the Wellington mines.

The fonds consists of photographs handed down through generations in the Dunsmuir family, some of the images are copies made for each of the Dunsmuir family members so there is some duplication across albums. The photo dates range from the late 1800s up to the 1960s. They include images of Hatley Castle, designed by Samuel Maclure, the Japanese Garden, Italian Garden and the Rose Garden and surrounding grounds designed by the Boston landscape architectural firm of Brett and Hall. Buildings on the property include the stables, garage, tennis courts, barns and a Lord and Burnham designed greenhouse. There are also many images of Dunsmuir family members, friends, visitors to Hatley Park and other properties, and trips to other destinations. These people and locations are not always identified.

Additionally, ephemera in this fonds includes an original copy of the Crimson Paradise film premiere program, with autographs from some of the cast, as well as the 1939 Maynard auction catalogue and the visitors book from Dolaura. This book was used first on the family yacht and includes a signature from Kaiser Wilhelm in 1908. In later years, Dola (Dunsmuir) Cavendish (1903-1966), used the book at her home, which was also named Dolaura. A number of celebrity signatures can be found here.

  • ca. 1908-1914

The images are from Laura Catterall Ferguson’s family album. The images mostly concern the construction of Hatley Park and the Catterall’s residence on the property during construction. Head contractor Thomas Catterall’s son, Harry, also worked on the project and lived on site with his wife Ada (Gladding) Catterall. Their two young children, Helen and Tommie were also on site. Tommie Catterall also worked for the Dunsmuirs at Hatley Park as a general handyman in the 1930s and there is an oral history interview with this Tom Catterall available in the archives. The photocopied album pages from where the images were scanned contain useful contextual information about the family and the timeline for construction.

Images within the photo albums follow the lives of Charlie and Jennie Mann and their two daughters, Helen Harriet (‘Helen’) and Dorothy Joan (‘Joan’). Charlie had a variety of employment throughout BC, including teamster and dairyman at Hatley Park (1911-1922), Fireman at Producer Sand and Gravel Pit, Royal Bay (1919-1921), Herdsman at Lakeview Farm, Duncan (1926-27) and Fintry Farm, Okanagan (1927-1933). He also worked for the forestry corps during WWII. Not all of the images were scanned from the albums, as the content was unrelated to the Mann family or Hatley Park. There are also images of the Scottish home of Jennie McLean. After their marriage in 1916, Jennie travelled with Charlie across the Atlantic. While Charlie served in the war, Jennie stayed with her parents and gave birth to their first child, Helen. They returned to Hatley Park when the war ended.

Royal Roads Memorial Plaque Collection

  • 1941 - 2022

In 2021, the Military Heritage Committee at RRU approved the creation of a memorial plaque to honour the Royal Roads ex-cadets/alumni who gave their lives in the line of duty. The project was approved by RRU executive in March of 2022 for completion before the ex-cadet Homecoming event in September 2022. To provide more information about the people named on the plaque, it was agreed that a ‘book of remembrance’ would be created. This collection, comprising newspaper articles, photographs, biographies, obituaries, etc., serves that purpose. Veterans Affairs Canada also maintains similar files in a registry to honour and remember the sacrifices of Canadians who have given their lives serving in uniform. This information is available online in the Canadian Virtual War Memorial (CVWM). With permission, the entries in the CVWM have been saved as pdfs in this collection, and links to the original CVWM pages are provided.
